Grey Knights - Squad Talnoc

Noone quite knows why the Grey Knights are in the sector but they have appeared on the battlefield with the regiment on at least two occasions.

Squad markings indicate their leader is Talnoc

I am slowly getting round to actually having a photograph of pretty much all my models that I have. I thought it might be useful for me to post them up on here a few blocks at a time.

Stormtroopers - "Ash Wolves"

The Ash Wolves were on secondment to the regiment. Usually operating out of the Saecarro sector they were brought in to investigate some unusual signals in the deserts on Vorix 6

Stormtroopers - "Red Serpents"

The Red Serpents have been attached to the regiment for some time now. They are typically used for deep insertion behind enemy lines.

Necromunda

For my birthday (ok... that was way back in August) I asked for and gratefully received a box of the new Orlocks. I have always had Orlocks as my Necromunda gang, from way back in the day. These new lot put me off a bit when I first saw them, they seemed so different, but I must admit they are growing on me

I have also had one of these objectives boxes for some time after snapping up one cheap from a games store on an online sale

They are the current batch on my painting plan (ok.. that means they have sat on top of the cupboard in the kitchen for AGES whilst I find the time and motivation to get back into painting!)

VIP types and citizens

These little things were bought as presents for me (ok... I had them on a wishlist and I think my wife clicked at random on the list)

I like the look of some of these. I think they match up with the old 2nd Edition / Rogue Trader type look very nicely and they add a bit of snazz to the collection

I know the bases are not finished and look pretty rough. I was trying to experiment with a way to base them on a normal sized base as they come with a set metal base as they are one piece models. This was a dodgy attempt to cover it up with some air dry clay. I think a bit more work on this and it could be more presentable.

I think some of these could easily pass for a marshal, or someone to call in a bit of air support or some such.

Remember those models that were a blast from the past? (well... ok... maybe posting on the blog after such a long time is that in itself)

Well they did get a paint job...

Pretty basic job but I am happy with them for the moment.

In fact I had finished them and put them away before I even realised I had not done any real basic highlights or anything... hey ho!

I think they could fit quite well in the stormtrooper type role. Or even specialist troops from PDF or something similar. They could also probably pass as Arbites in Necromunda.

Total War again

So I have played a fair bit of Total War. I do love it. The mechanics is good, the races are well done I think (you can always moan about something that is missing but it is clear it was done by gamers who care and understand... the bulk of it is there).

People do say Empire is a good starting place... well.. maybe I am a bit thick but I struggled every time I played them. Granted the first time I was unaware of a lot of things and how to go about things. But I gave them several goes and each time it ground to a halt and I got hemmed in and bashed up.

I actually preferred the Dwarves. They were much easier for a newbie to play through. They have a decent starting position with their flanks pretty much sorted and their infantry is tough and forgiving, if a little lacking in get up and go.

I loved playing Bretonnians. These were my fantasy army. Playing them in Total War I did enjoy, although I am still so frustrated by how poor their cavalry come across (I never really understood, agreed or liked the fact that Empire got much better cavalry than Bretonnians in the tabletop game, and it is almost true here as well).

I played a little with the vampires but to be honest I have never really enjoyed the "bad guys", be that Orcs, Chaos or Vampires.

I did enjoy playing as the Wood Elves. I think their units give a nice little twist and make you play in a different way and keep things interesting.

All in all the game is excellent. Getting it on a Humble Bundle just made it such good value it is unreal. I rarely pay for any DLC but the Wood Elves were worth it (the Bretonnians were free DLC).

Total War!

So I have had my eye on Total War: Warhammer for some time.

I actually bought it in a Humble Bundle Monthly deal, which was excellent value for money. Loaded it up. Could hear the sound. Got all interested. Nothing. Not a thing on the screen!

Turns out, after much fretting and checking, that my good old graphics card just was not enough to cope (GT 9600). I could not afford a new one so it all went on the back burner.

Over the next few months I tried to scrimp and save a bit...very difficult at the moment... all my real cash goes on the family and house, as it should. But I did take part in a long survey for SKY and earned £50. I also got £50 for my birthday in August. And during spare bits of time I did a lot of the surveys on Opinion Outpost, earning £2.50 in Amazon vouchers here and there.

Eventually I count my pennies and do some research. A 1050 Ti looked like a good bet. It actually used much less power than my old card (it takes it all from the rail), was quieter (fans only spin up when put under serious load) and was a decent price point (expensive for me, but decent bang for your pound).

I did a lot of research and tracked down an EVGA slightly overclocked one on Amazon. Totted up and added on all my vouchers. After £90 of vouchers (!) and £50 birthday money it actually only cost me £5 of real cash! Bargain!

I was not looking forward to the change over, having worked with IT for so long and seen so many things go wrong. In the end, absolutely faultless and painless. Even put the old card into my wife's PC downstairs to boost it a bit.

First thing I loaded after checking everything? Oh yeah... Total War!

Finally! An oh boy was it worth the wait. I have always wanted Total War to come into the Warhammer universe, and to be honest, they have done themselves proud. I have now played through several campaigns, trying the Empire several times (once getting trounced late game as everyone around me declared war at the same time, another giving up after a time), Dwarves (to completion, enjoyed that one) and I am now into a Wood Elves campaign (yes I paid £10 for the DLC... wanted to try them out as something different, and given I had a bit of cash on me at the time and I had saved so much over the last year with the package I treated myself).
